  • Bunion Relief for Adults

This post is sponsored by Stryker . Only your doctor can help you decide if surgery is your best option.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m all about self-care. As moms, it’s easy for us to prioritize the needs of our family and neglect our own. We make sure our kids never miss a wellness check while we put off a two-minute call to make appointments for ourselves. Here’s the thing: this usually causes more harm than good in the long term. This is particularly true if you’re struggling with bunions, which are bony bumps that develop mostly at the base of the big toe where the joint is located. Based on the location where they develop, bunions usually reduce the mobility of the big toe which can lead to constant foot pain – something us moms should avoid especially since our kids keep us on our feet. As a disclaimer, I have never had bunions.

What Are Bunions and How Do They Affect Adults?

Let’s dive a bit more into bunions! At my first job out of college, I had a fabulous coworker – let’s call her Mary who is still one of the top five most fashionable women I’ve ever met. Mary was older than me with the most gorgeous wardrobe, so much so one coworker even took one of her coats for a spin around the block one day (a story for another day). The only thing is Mary had bunions and I’m glad she was transparent with us about them. She told us her story and educated us younger women at the job about bunions. Mary’s bunions started out small and got progressively worse over the years.

Mary worked full time in New York City and had two kids who were pretty active.  She was always on her feet—whether she was rushing to make school drop-offs, pacing through the grocery store aisles, or catching the subway to work. Just like many of us moms, the last thing she needed was the pain of bunions to hold her back, but they did. Mary’s bunions made her feel self-conscious about her feet, and while she was still fashionable, this limited her shoe choices. In a city where everyone walks at record speeds, it was very noticeable how the foot pain from bunions had slowed Mary’s pace.

Bunion Treatment May Help Some Adults

I always wondered if Mary could get treatment for her bunions since they affected her life in so many ways. As moms, we try to find solutions for any and all issues that our kids face, so I think it’s only right that we do the same for ourselves. If you, like Mary, have foot pain due to bunions — even if they’re small or you’ve trained yourself to try to ignore the pain—keep in mind that bunions can get worse over time if left untreated. Bunions can cause the foot’s bone structure to gradually change and a bump could develop on the foot. The deformity may increase over time. causing more deformities like toe crowding1

So yes, moms should find treatment options to prevent further damage, make walking more comfortable, and allow more shoe options. Treating bunions can prevent further foot problems that affect overall health and, most importantly, it can set a positive example to your kids.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Adults with Bunions?

    Stryker’s Surgical Options:

While non-surgical treatments can ease the burden of living with bunions, they are by no means a long-term solution and do not correct the root cause of bunions. I have not had bunion surgery myself, and only your doctor can tell you whether bunion surgery is right for you. Stryker surgical options are designed to provide relief from the pain caused by bunions, preserve mobility, and improve the appearance of your foot: Two of Stryker’s surgical options are: LapiFuse and PROstep MIS2.

    LapiFuse:

    • LapiFuse is designed to reduce pain and prevent the likelihood of needing future procedures3,4 by eliminating the bunion while maintaining your foot’s natural alignment post-surgery.
    • LapiFuse is designed to keep the foot’s natural appearance4.
    •  LapiFuse is designed to address bunion in the midfoot, preserving joint movement of the big toe, meaning more flexibility of the joint compared to traditional bunion surgery5.

    PROstep MIS:

    • PROstep minimally invasive surgery involves performing surgery through tiny incisions, usually under some form of image guidance.  The incisions are just a few millimeters long compared to 3-5 inch incisions used in traditional open bunion surgery. Very small drills (called burrs) are used to make delicate cuts in the bone of the foot and re-align the bone though the small incisions6
    • A minimally invasive procedure is designed to cause less pain7 and as a mom you can return to your regular lifestyle faster8,9
    • Since this surgery is usually carried out under image guidance, surgeons have a line of sight into the foot while operating.

With Stryker’s surgical options, you can say goodbye to bunion pain and get back to your busy mom life. Remember, taking care of your feet isn’t selfish – it is necessary for your wellbeing.  Only your doctor can tell you if bunion surgery is right for you, but if you’re thinking about surgical options to treat your bunions, Stryker may have options that fit your lifestyle and needs.Have you dealt with bunions? What’s been your experience?

  • Planning a Turks and Caicos Trip: Where to Stay, Play and Eat in Providenciales

Planning a Turks and Caicos Trip: Where to Stay, Play and Eat in Providenciales

I just returned from my first trip of 2023! A vacation to celebrate my 40th birthday in Turks & Caicos and I had a blast. This trip was much needed and a fantastic break from my busy routine as a mom of three, content creator, work and most importantly from the harsh New York winter. This was my second visit to the Turks & Caicos Islands but my first to Providenciales island aka Provo. I received a few messages on Instagram for more information about my itinerary and accommodations, so I thought it would be best to put together this guide with all the details you would need if you’re planning a trip to Turks & Caicos Islands.

Where I Stayed in Turks and Caicos?

    The Zenza Hotel

Where to Stay in Turks and Caicos

My top requirement for my hotel were a cleanliness, luxury, a convenient location and great views. After reading tons and tons of reviews and watching lots of hotel room tours, I decided to book the Zenza Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel located in the Turtle Cove area. This hotel offered three type of room options and I went with the king ocean views superior room.

I absolutely loved the hotel! It was CLEAN and I can be totally OCD at hotels so I checked everything upon arrival. Of course, I did my own sanitizing but that was mostly for peace of mind. Most of the staff at the hotel were nice and helpful. I must let you know that this hotel is located on a marina and not on the beach. When I was making my decision, I did go back and forth but I always stay on the beach and I was excited for a different experience. Although, The Zenza Hotel isn’t located on the beach it is only 5 minutes away from two beaches. They provide bicycles for guests as well beach shuttle via golf cart upon request, so it’s easy and fun to get to the beach from the hotel. I loved that although the hotel isn’t located on the beach, they have loungers set up at the beaches for guests. The beaches are called Smith Reef and Babalua Beach. Smith Reef is great for snorkeling, if that’s your thing. Babalua Beach was my favorite of the all four beaches I visited on Providenciales mainly because of how private it is, there were barely any other people at the beach so you can truly just unwind.

The Zenza Hotel is also located close to three restaurants and one café. I wouldn’t recommend the cafe, the service was slow but all three restaurants were fantastic. Mango Reef, Baci and Sharkbite.

This hotel isn’t all-inclusive hotel but they provide bottled water, and light snacks like fruits and fresh pastries every morning in the reception area.

My room was on the third floor but there is a rooftop terrace with 360 degree views on the fourth floor where I loved to hang out.

If you’re going to stay at The Zenza Hotel, keep in mind that the pool isn’t impressive. I was a bit underwhelmed but it and didn’t use it. I hope that they would do more to make the pool area more inviting. Also, be sure to walk with your own bath bombs if you’re going to take a bath in the tub as they weren’t provided. My other issue was that my room was described as having motorized blinds but upon checking into my room, it didn’t have motorized blinds.

That said, my stay was definitely luxurious and I would stay here again. If you’re planning a family vacation, I don’t think this hotel is as kid-friendly as other accommodations on Providenciales but this is the perfect hotel for a solo trip or baecation.

@rattlesandheels The Zenza Hotel room tour in Turks & Caicos! This hotel didn’t disappoint! Such a fabulous boutique hotel. Recommend 10/10! #turksandcaicosislands #providencialesturksandcaicos #boutiquehotels #luxuryhotel #blackgirltraveltok #blacktravelcreator #hotelroomtour ♬ Nuttin Nuh Go So – Notch

Where to eat in Turks and Caicos?

    @rattlesandheels Where to eat in Turks & Caicos! #turksandcaicos #turksandcaicosislands🇹🇨 #turksandcaicosvacation #turksandcaicostravel ♬ Ta Ta Ta – Bayanni

I went with a list of restaurants that came highly recommended but I wasn’t able to visit every single restaurant on my list (sorry Conch Shack). I just didn’t have enough time to get to each restaurant on my list in one trip so I will definitely visit the others, the next time I visit Providenciales.

    Castaways

I had dinner at Castaways on my first night and it is the perfect dinner location. It’s located in the Grace Bay area and is very lively. They had a DJ playing afrobeats music and later a live band. Castaways is a lovely outdoor setup and it’s very casual so no need to get dressed up. You can take a look at the menu here. I had the conch sampler, it’s listed as an appetizer but my server said it was the most popular order at the restaurant so I tried it.

    Baci

Baci is an Italian restaurant and it’s located on the marina next door to the Zenza hotel. My favorite dinner of the trip was at Baci, the service there is impeccable. All of the staff really were incredible. I ate outdoors marina side and watched the sunset, it was magical and the food was beyond delicious. I’m a bruschetta girl, and I absolutely loved their bruschetta. You can view Baci’s menu here. I loved the convenience of walking there from my hotel.

    Sharkbite

While we’re on the conversation of resturants within walking distance of my hotel, Sharkbite is also next door. The views are amazing at Sharkbite but the space can use a functional update in my opinion.I had the jerk chicken with rice and peas and the food was good. It’s a good location for takeout, if you’re not in a mood to dine-in.

I planned to dine in at the restaurant but the chairs were a bit uncomfortable out on the deck and the space was small and tight.

    Mango Reef

Mango Reef is the other restaurant within walking distance of my hotel (although I didn’t walk there lol). It’s another outdoor restaurant in the marina. It’s the most spacious of the three restaurants. I had lunch at Mango Reef and the food and service were both fantastic. You can check out the menu here

    Aziza

I had dinner here for my birthday and loved everything! The décor is perfect! The service and the food was wonderful. It was 10/10 experience. They also have a lounge and it’s apparently really fun later in the evening so if you’re looking for that type of experience definitely head there. You can view their menu here

The Deck at Seven Stars Resort

The Deck at Seven Stars Resort is a lovely beachside grill. The views are fantastic and so was the service. I had lunch there during my Grace Bay Beach day.

    Things to do?

This vacation was all about beach time and that’s why I chose this destination. I spent a lot of my time at Babalua Beach.

I absolutely loved that beach and would recommend it for anyone look for a secluded beach experience.

    Grace Bay Beach

Grace Bay is the most popular beach in Provinciales and it’s been voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by many magazines.  I am a beach snob so I went to Turks and Caicos for the beaches especially Grace Bay. Grace Bay is without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches I have visited.

Since I wasn’t staying at a Grace Bay beach resort, I paid $35 for a beach set up which included a lounger and umbrella which was fantastic. They set everything up for me, even moved the umbrella as sun changed throughout the day and I felt totally pampered.  They also offered fresh coconuts which I enjoyed.

    Unique Tours Horseback Riding

Planning a Turks and Caicos Trip: Where to Stay, Play and Eat in Providenciales

This experience bought me so much joy! I did my research when choosing a company to do horseback riding in the ocean and of the three companies that offers this service in Providenciales, Unique Tours seemed to be the better option because they also offered a shuttle to and from my hotel. Their service was truly great, I lost track of time (as one does on vacation) and I forgot my pick-up time so I was having lunch at Mango Reef when they came to get me from my hotel and they were nice enough to pick me up at the restaurant instead.

This was my first time riding and I was low key a little nervous but they gave me a horse who was super chill and that worked out perfectly for my experience. We rode along Blue Hills Beach and while we were riding we spotted turtles and stingrays in the water. I would definitely recommend them and use them again when I return to the island.

    Looking Glass Drone Shoot

Did you really go to Turks & Caicos Islands if you didn’t do a drone shoot in the clear kayaks in the turquoise waters? I’ve had this on my list for years. I looked at another company and since it was so hard to book on their website I decided to go with this Looking Glass as they were very professional.

It rained a little the morning of my photoshoot and they had to change the location of the shoot. That was smooth experience, they both called and emailed me to ensure that I had the updated address.

They directed me throughout the entire shoot and made me feel comfortable. I got all my images and video airdropped to me before leaving the beach. Overall, it was a lot of fun, I would definitely recommend them.

Of course there are many more things to do like ATV tours, sunset cruises, the shipwreck, ocean bars etc. but I don’t have first hand experiences of those from this trip.

    How to get around?

This is the area where I had to learn the hard way so if you’re planning a trip to Turks and Caicos please rent a car. Before my trip to Provo, I kept seeing recommendations to rent a car versus taking taxis as it’s less expensive but I really wanted to relax and not worry about driving in a new country. Well, I did enjoy that but I felt like the taxis we not only expensive but I missed the privacy of driving myself around. I would definitely rent a car, the next time I visit the island.

    Is it expensive?

Another thing to keep in mind when planning a trip to Turks and Caicos is as as expensive as it’s rumored to be due to the taxes. Personal hygiene products, gas and groceries, transportation were expensive, a lot of products double to price in the US. There is also taxes added to your hotel, food excursions bookings etc. Definitely, keep this in mind as you plan your trip.

I hope this guide is helpful and if you’re planning a trip to Turks and Caicos. Provo is so beautiful, you wouldn’t regret it.

9 Books By Black Women Authors To Read Summer 2022!

I love to read in the summer and while I don’t always have the time during the school year as I’m busy orbiting around my three children’s lives during the school year, the summer is when I get to indulge in some good books. I was sick in bed this week so, I got a bit of a head start and, I enjoyed reading so much that I decided to put together a list of books by Black women authors that I plan to read and/or, re-read this summer. This list is a mix of new books and books I’ve read before that I loved that I believe will be perfect for your summer travel, vacations, etc.

9 Books By Black Women Authors To Read Summer 2022

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi

So this is a double on the list because I still haven’t read The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi, it’s been on my book list for a while so I’m looking forward to reading both books this summer. You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty will be released on May 24th but you can already pre-order it here. Here is the book’s synopsis:

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the dangerous thrill Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits. This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love?

Even more exciting, Amazon Studios won an auction for the screen rights to You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty for Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society will develop it so I’m incredibly happy to have this book on my list.

The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett

I just finished this book yesterday and I miss reading it, it was such a good book that I found myself completely invested in the lives of the characters. I also enjoyed the journey along with the lives of one character in particular. Since I’ve been finished with this book, I’ve been thirsty to talk about it with anyone who would listen. The themes of this book are very interesting to me as a Black woman. One thing, the end was a bit abrupt but I was able to let that slide since I enjoyed the book so much. I did some research and learned that this book will be made into a television series on HBO by our girl Issa Rae, so I look forward to seeing how they would interpret the story and characters on screen.

The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, Southern Black community and running away at age 16, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it’s everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her Black daughter in the same Southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for White, and her White husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters’ storylines intersect?

Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passingLooking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person’s decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins.

Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

If you’re like me, all of your friends read this book last summer and you just didn’t get the chance to read it yet. Seven Days in June didn’t disappoint the way that some books disappoint when everyone’s raved about it. This book’s rights have also been purchased for us to see it on-screen which is also very cool. I love that so many Black women authors are getting these incredible opportunities.

Eva Mercy is a single mom and bestselling erotica writer who is feeling pressed from all sides. Shane Hall is a reclusive, enigmatic, award‑winning novelist, who, to everyone’s surprise, shows up in New York.

When Shane and Eva meet unexpectedly at a literary event, sparks fly, raising not only their buried traumas, but the eyebrows of the Black literati. What no one knows is that fifteen years earlier, teenage Eva and Shane spent one crazy, torrid week madly in love. While they may be pretending not to know each other, they can’t deny their chemistry—or the fact that they’ve been secretly writing to each other in their books through the years.

Over the next seven days, amidst a steamy Brooklyn summer, Eva and Shane reconnect—but Eva’s wary of the man who broke her heart, and wants him out of the city so her life can return to normal. Before Shane disappears though, she needs a few questions answered…

With its keen observations of creative life in America today, as well as the joys and complications of being a mother and a daughter, Seven Days in June is a hilarious, romantic, and sexy‑as‑hell story of two writers discovering their second chance at love.

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

This book was another good read from last summer that I recommended to all of my friends and if you listen to my podcast, you know I shared my obsession with it there too. As an island girl, I couldn’t out this book down and I was happy to hear that it’s also been adapted into a television series. Here is the synopsis:

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Black Cake: A Novel by Charmaine Wilkerson

I’ve been hearing so much good buzz around Black Cake: A Novel by Charmaine Wilkerson that I had to add it to my list. I’m a casual member of a few online reading groups and I’ve been seeing a lot of members raving this book. I plan to read it soon, so I will be sure to update this post with my personal review. In the meanwhile, below is the synopsis:

We can’t choose what we inherit. But can we choose who we become?
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Can Byron and Benny reclaim their once-close relationship, piece together Eleanor’s true history, and fulfill her final request to “share the black cake when the time is right”? Will their mother’s revelations bring them back together or leave them feeling more lost than ever?

Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut novel is a story of how the inheritance of betrayals, secrets, memories, and even names can shape relationships and history. Deeply evocative and beautifully written, Black Cake is an extraordinary journey through the life of a family changed forever by the choices of its matriarch.

Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn

One of my best friends can’t stop talking about Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn so I had to add it to my summer list, I’m really excited to read it this summer. Below is the synopsis:

Yinka’s Nigerian aunties frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, her work friends think she’s too traditional (she’s saving herself for marriage!), her girlfriends think she needs to get over her ex already, and the men in her life…well, that’s a whole other story. But Yinka herself has always believed that true love will find her when the time is right.
Still, when her cousin gets engaged, Yinka commences Operation Find-A-Date for Rachel’s Wedding. Aided by a spreadsheet and her best friend, Yinka is determined to succeed. Will Yinka find herself a huzband? And what if the thing she really needs to find is herself?
Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? is a fresh, uplifting story of an unconventional heroine who bravely asks the questions we all have about love. Wry, moving, irresistible, this is a love story that makes you smile but also makes you think–and explores what it means to find your way between two cultures, both of which are yours.

    Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a must-read book for every Black woman in my opinion, actually for every woman. It’s a book that found me, I had meant to read it for years and then one day I was walking to my car from lunch with friends in Brooklyn Heights when I saw a copy on a brownstone stoop, a gesture to pass it along to the next reader so I grabbed it. I couldn’t put the book the down and it’s by far on one of the best books I’ve ever read. Do yourself a favor and read it. Here is the synopsis of Americanah:

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time.

Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.

    Frying Plantains

Frying Plantains is another one of my favorite recent reads, I read it last year and I fell in love with this book. It’s a quick read so perfect for a flight or poolside summer read.

Kara Davis is a girl caught in the middle — of her North American identity and her desire to be a “true” Jamaican, of her mother and grandmother’s rages and life lessons, of having to avoid being thought of as too “faas” or too “quiet” or too “bold” or too “soft.” In these twelve interconnected stories, we see Kara on a visit to Jamaica, startled by the sight of a severed pig’s head in her great-aunt’s freezer; in junior high, the victim of a devastating prank by her closest friends; and as a teenager in and out of her grandmother’s house, trying to cope with ongoing battles of unyielding authority.

A rich and unforgettable portrait of growing up between worlds, Frying Plantain shows how, in one charged moment, friendship and love can turn to enmity and hate, well-meaning protection can become control, and teasing play can turn to something much darker.

    The Mothers by Britt Bennett

Since I enjoyed The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett so much, I’m looking forward to reading The Mothers too. I’ve read so many reviews that states this book was actually better than The Vanishing Half and since I enjoyed it so much, I’m looking forward to reading The Mothers.

Set within a contemporary black community in Southern California, Brit Bennett’s mesmerizing first novel is an emotionally perceptive story about community, love, and ambition. It begins with a secret.

“All good secrets have a taste before you tell them, and if we’d taken a moment to swish this one around our mouths, we might have noticed the sourness of an unripe secret, plucked too soon, stolen and passed around before its season.”

It is the last season of high school life for Nadia Turner, a rebellious, grief-stricken, seventeen-year-old beauty. Mourning her own mother’s recent suicide, she takes up with the local pastor’s son. Luke Sheppard is twenty-one, a former football star whose injury has reduced him to waiting tables at a diner. They are young; it’s not serious. But the pregnancy that results from this teen romance—and the subsequent cover-up—will have an impact that goes far beyond their youth. As Nadia hides her secret from everyone, including Aubrey, her God-fearing best friend, the years move quickly. Soon, Nadia, Luke, and Aubrey are full-fledged adults and still living in debt to the choices they made that one seaside summer, caught in a love triangle they must carefully maneuver, and dogged by the constant, nagging question: What if they had chosen differently? The possibilities of the road not taken are a relentless haunt.

In entrancing, lyrical prose, The Mothers asks whether a “what if” can be more powerful than an experience itself. If, as time passes, we must always live in servitude to the decisions of our younger selves, to the communities that have parented us, and to the decisions we make that shape our lives forever.

I hope you enjoy these 9 Books By Black Women Authors To Read this Summer of 2022! Let me know your summer reading book recommendations in the comments below.

13 Ways to Reduce Anxiety Naturally

After giving birth to my third child, I experienced anxiety for the first time. While many of my friends describe going through postpartum depression, I had a case of postpartum anxiety. I thought it would go away once we got past the infant stage, but it didn’t, and I guess I learned to live it over the years. Just before my child turned two, I realized that I was also dealing with Seasonal Affective Disorder, and that’s when I sought out therapy. I’ve been seeing an art therapist for over two years now, and I’ve been able to work on healing a lot of my past trauma as well as not having recurring SAD symptoms. I’ve learned a lot in that time, and she’s shared some handy tools with me to reduce my anxiety naturally. I wanted to share a few of these tools with those who deal with anxiety, high stress, or panic attacks.

    Supplements

I’ve become serious about taking supplements over the last year. I used to be very wishy-washy about taking them, but I’ve discovered that they help me feel my best. Supplements I take daily to reduce anxiety are Ashwagandha, L-theanine, and Vitamin B-Complex. I’ve also read that gut health is essential for reducing anxiety, so I take Seed symbiotic.

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”4720221″]

    Meditation

In 2019, I became a big fan of meditating and started meditating daily and catching classes whenever I could look at meditation studios here in New York. The now-closed Inscape used to be my favorite, along with MNDFL, but I’ve tried many others. It is seriously nothing as incredible as a sound bath meditation. Since going to a studio isn’t possible for me, I listen to sound bath meditation sounds on Spotify while I meditate at home. You can also purchase your own singing bowls.

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”4720220″]

One thing a lot of people don’t tell you is that meditation can be challenging when you’re very anxious. On those days, I’ve found that mindful drawing meditations are the best way to calm myself, like I shared in this Instagram reel. If you don’t want to draw like me, you can get a few adult mindful coloring books like these.

    Box Breathing

My therapist taught me to do box breathing, especially after dealing with panic attacks. Panic attacks can be scary, the first one I experienced was on the subway, and I was convinced I would stop breathing. I wasn’t sure what was happening, and I was scared, especially since I couldn’t get off the train, and we were in the tunnel under the East River. Here is a video with more information on box breathing and how to do it effectively.

    Breathing Properly

While we talk about breathing, I would say that it’s only during the pandemic that I’ve realized how shallow I breathe at times and that I don’t breathe properly. I have a level of self-awareness now where I’m continuously checking to ensure that I’m breathing correctly. I was breathing with my neck and shoulders for as long as I can remember, and I felt so good breathing accurately that I even joked that I had never taken a breath before. Check out this video on how we should be breathing.

    Yoga

I am far from a yogi, I’m not very flexible, and I’ve done only beginner yoga, but I’ve found some beneficial videos for feeling anxious. I tend to carry stress within my body, so restorative yoga is helpful.

    [show_lookbook_widget id=”519365″]

    Exercise

I’m trying to get myself back into a regular exercise routine, but as I’ve shared in the past, exercise is an effective way to reduce exercise. Please read this post about how exercise helped me with anxiety in the past.

    Therapy

I’m a firm believer that everyone needs therapy; over the last year, I’ve had experiences that I was able to process with my therapist, I’ve also been able to heal some of my past traumas. I would highly recommend therapy to anyone who needs it.

    Journaling

My mental growth journey started when I began journaling almost ten years ago. It’s one of the best ways to organize my thoughts, do a brain dump and make sense of anything I am worried about. Whether you get a guided journal or you use a basic notebook, I think we should all have a journal. I also like doing a gratitude journal as well. As simple as it is, gratitude is a powerful antidote for anxiety.

    [show_shopthepost_widget id=”4720233″]

    Sleep

I know you’re probably reading this late at night because you CAN’T sleep, not because you don’t WANT to sleep, so I would share a few things that help me when I can’t sleep. For one, get off your phone/screens, or if you can’t avoid them use blue light glasses like Dreamers. I’ve also found that laying quietly and doing visualizations or reading a book helps me to drift off as well. If you can, take a nap during the day or sleep in whenever you can.

    Music

Music really helps me reduce my anxiety! Since I was a kid, I’ve loved how music makes me feel, and I know I can always lean into music when I’m not feeling my best. I’ve found it helpful is making a few “happy” playlists on Spotify with my favorite songs. Soca and dancehall music specifically always makes me happy.

    Diet

I think we all notice when we eat something and feel terrible after. Some foods make us feel bloated or gassy, but sometimes they can make us feel nervous and cloud our ability to think clearly. Three years ago, I cut meat from my diet for one year. I didn’t feel great after eating it; at the time, I felt better when I ate plant-based foods, so I listened to my body. I was still breastfeeding, and I realized that when I stopped breastfeeding, I felt much different and craved meat again. Shortly after cutting off meat, I also cut coffee from my diet because it made me feel hyper and unable to focus on anything. Take note of how things make you feel. Even if they’re things you think you need daily, there is always a substitute. I replaced my daily cup of coffee with matcha, and it’s been all good since.

    Nature

I need to do more of this during colder weather, but spending time in nature is very helpful when you’re anxious. Leaning into a tree can help you find some relief, and some people believe you can transfer negative feelings into the tree. There is also a practice called grounding. I learned about it for the first time in 2018 and found that it’s very effective in helping me feel better. You have to stand barefoot, so it’s not something you can do in the winter. There is an energetic exchange for sure.

    Socializing

I’m an introvert, so socializing isn’t something that I’m naturally drawn to, especially when I’m anxious, but I’ve found that done in a space where I feel safe and around people I trust is helpful. I think self-awareness is crucial here, though, because deciding to go to a party when you’re anxious might not be beneficial, but spending some time with just a few friends or family members can be.

I hope that these tips all help you reduce anxiety naturally. Try different tools, see if they work, and add them to your routine if they feel good for you. If you’re tried all of these and none of these work, don’t live in pain. Reach out to your healthcare provider and try to get help. While trying natural remedies is a great way to start, please seek them if you need medical help.

  • Spring Cleaning Checklist Printable

Let’s start cleaning with this Spring Cleaning Checklist Printable!

Okay, so I have a confession! I am utterly obsessed with TikTok ASMR cleaning and organizing videos. I watch them every day, and they’re so satisfying. I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning (even broke my dishwasher in the process), but I’m excited to go with the seasons’ transition with some spring cleaning.

I don’t know about you, but after spending so much time indoors for the last few months, I think we’re all looking for ways to freshen up our homes and do some spring cleaning. Living in New York, it’s felt like we’ve been hibernating since last November, and I’m excited to reinvigorate the energy of our home. Spring cleaning sometimes feels overwhelming, so to ensure you’re prepared and have a plan to keep things manageable, I created this spring cleaning checklist printable to use as a guide.

You can use this printable custom to your needs; select the rooms you’re going to be working on and then mark them off as you go. I have covered just about every room in the home with tasks that will help us get our house in its cleanest state. You can use this printable to clean your home yourself, or if you’re hiring help or designating, you can give it to them, so they know exactly what you need them to do.

Scroll Down For Spring Cleaning Tips!

As promised before are a few spring cleaning tips that I hope will help you get the desired results!

Focus on one thing at a time.

Focus on one thing at a time, whether it’s one room or one task; make sure you’re spring cleaning intentionally and focusing on one thing at a time so you can do it effectively. For instance, yesterday, I focused on our linen closet, and I removed everything, wiped the shelves, swept and dusted, and then organized it. There have been times when I’ve started working on one thing and got sidetracked by doing laundry or simultaneously beginning to work on another space, and I ended up not doing it well or not finishing at all. You can’t multitask when spring cleaning unless you’re designating another area to someone else.

    Get help

That leads me to my second tip, get help especially if you’re tacking a large square footage. You can hire a house cleaner or ask your friends and family to help you out. Spring cleaning in our house requires work from everyone who lives here even my 4-year-old who loves using the Swiffer duster and helping us unload the dishwasher.

Move furniture to bring life to your space

When I was growing up my grandmother would rearrange her living room whenever she did spring cleaning. I loved when she did that because it felt like a different home, a different experience. Moving furniture can change the energy of a room, improve the aesthetics and more importantly you can clean spaces that we hidden.

Spring is all about bright and airy vibes so make sure you’re brining the energy of life into your home with fresh flowers and/or citrus like lemons, limes and oranges. You can also make floral arrangements that combine the two. As a Caribbean girl, I also use lemons for a lot of our cleaning. I also use them clean our garbage disposal, chopping boards and microwave. There is just something about lemon that makes me feel good.

    Declutter

This should be the first thing you do before you start cleaning. Declutter and determine what you want to keep, donate and throw away. If you have kids you will find that you need to do this more often in their closets as they grow out of clothes and accumulate new clothes very quickly.

Focus on organization systems for easier maintenance

If you have a lot of things that need to be cleaned in your home and you don’t have a lot of space, consider investing in some organization while you spring clean. Not only will this make your home feel better and more manageable. You will be better able to maintain a clean home. You can invest in under sink organizers, kitchen cabinets organization, closets, garage and more. See some of my recommendations below.

I hope you found this post and the spring cleaning checklist printable useful and you enjoy your spring. Drop a content below letting me know which room you plan to tackle first.

5 Low Maintenance Indoor Plants You Wouldn’t Kill

  • 5 Low Maintenance Indoor Plants You Wouldn’t Kill

Tired of killing all of your plants? Scroll down for 5 low maintenance indoor plants that even you wouldn’t kill.

Those of you who’ve been following me for a while know that if it’s one thing I could do, it’s killing a plant. It’s not intentional, I genuinely love having plants in my space, but I just don’t have a green thumb.

I’ve purchased a lot of gorgeous plants over the years that I was excited to see grow and flourish, including two palms and an anthurium that I really wished worked out. I still miss this pretty monstera that I got during the quarantine that sadly died after a few months (the small plant in that pic is still alive though).

With that said, I’ve had to humble myself and stick to the plants that I can actually keep alive. Plants that make me feel like I have a green thumb don’t require me to join plant groups or take a course to take care of them. I’m writing this post for those of you out there who are just like me, love plants but can’t keep them alive. These are the foolproof plants that will survive no matter what.

    Snake plant

At this point, I am the snake plant queen. When I noticed that all of my plants were dying, but my snake plants continued to thrive, I knew I was on to something. Low light, no light, too much light, the snake plant doesn’t care. It’s a survivor, and it is the plant for me. I could easily fill my house with snake plants because they’re attractive and I don’t have to worry about them.

    Bamboo

    Low Maintenance Indoor Plants

I don’t own a bamboo plant, but my mom had one for years that she did little or nothing for and somehow survived. Bamboo plants are really low maintenance and require very little from you, plus they’re inexpensive and here in New York sold at bodegas and other neighborhood stores.

    Spider plant

I know you’ve seen the spider plant all over, and there is a reason for its popularity; they’re straightforward to care for, especially if you’re on the hunt for a low-maintenance hanging plant option.

    Money Tree

I like to joke that this is the office plant. Back in the day, when I was still working at an office, most of my co-workers had money tree plants, and they did well because they’re low maintenance indoor plants. I don’t remember any of their money tree plants dying, and they weren’t given the utmost care. I’m sure if you work in an office environment, you have at least one co-work with a money plant on their desk.

    Aloe

Growing up, we always had aloe plants in Grenada. They’re effortless to care for and require water infrequently. If you’re prone to forgetting to water your plants, you might want to get an aloe plant. They’re lovely, and aloe is excellent to have on hand as it can be used for many beauty and wellness purposes, including caring for open wounds and skin breakouts.

I hope this post is helpful and that you’re able to find low-maintenance plants that add life and beauty to your personal space that aren’t stressful to keep alive. There are many great benefits to having plants in your home, like they can be a natural air purifier and remove harmful toxins from the air, so don’t be scared to get these plants. You can shop for plants on Etsy if you don’t have time to shop in person or you want to support a farmer or Home Depot for pick-up. I’ve done both and purchased plants while shopping at the supermarket.

  • Setting Healthy Boundaries

It’s time for us to get better at setting healthy boundaries!

I feel like I spent most of my thirties unlearning toxic habits and then learning to set healthy boundaries. It’s been challenging for me, but thanks to my therapist, I’m finally starting to notice my growth and how I’ve been showing up for myself by setting healthy boundaries and honoring them.

Why is setting healthy boundaries so important?

When I first started on my self-care journey, I realized that one of the main factors contributing to my stress was not having boundaries in place. I’ve been good at shutting people out or separating myself from them, but that was a toxic practice that would make me prematurely sever people from my life. Having relationships with people I love is important to me so I had to figure out how to set boundaries in those relationships.

Setting boundaries forces me to have difficult conversations, share my feelings, and say no when something doesn’t work for me. It also helps me give people in my life to do the same and express what works for them. This even includes my children, who I encourage to set healthy boundaries too.

    Setting Healthy Boundaries

Say what you mean and mean what you say!

It’s hard to set boundaries when you don’t always speak your truth! I had a professor in grad school who always said, “Say what you mean, and mean what you say!” and he would follow that up with, “Most people don’t.” At the time, I understood what he meant, but until I started trying to establish my boundaries, I realize that this practice isn’t easy and most people really don’t. I found that people were happy when I didn’t establish boundaries with them but were quick to set their boundaries. This would cause me distress, but I’ve learned to express myself even when it feels weird so that I can be my full self.

    Boundaries on social media

One of the things that I’ve realized over the years is that people are a bit more daring on social media than in real life. They will overstep your boundaries in ways that they would never in real life. Setting boundaries on social media for me includes unfollowing, blocking, deleting disrespectful comments, and letting people know I’m not seeking unsolicited advice (many people don’t understand the concept of venting), muting, or deleting the apps from my phones.

Also, it’s important to keep your boundaries consistent in real life and online.

Remember setting healthy boundaries will improve your life.

Setting boundaries will be hard at times, especially with your loved ones but keep in mind that you will improve your life and overall happiness. Sometimes we have to do difficult things to get to live the way we desire.

Healthy boundaries will make you a better mom, partner, friend and family member.

    Adanna Dill

Also, don’t be one-sided! Encourage your friends and family to set boundaries too, so everyone will be happy.

Make sure to follow me on Instagram for daily posts!
