  • Tapered Cut Natural Hairstyle: Curlformers on Short Natural Hair

I tried Curlformers on short natural hair as a tapered cut natural hairstyle and I liked it!

Ps: This post contains affiliate links 🙂

I’ve been natural for long enough to accumulate ALL the things marketed to women with natural hair. When I first stopped relaxing my hair I was so excited about this new lifestyle that I got everything convinced I would try all the styles and keep my hair fresh 24/7. Curlformers was one of the tools I was excited about because they stretch natural hair into spirals without heat. I used them on my hair and in my older daughters hair (blog post here)and told all my mom friends about them when they started contemplating straightening their hair with heat.

Anyway, it’s been a few years since I last pulled them out but now that my hair is short, I thought it would be fun to see how they would look. I shared the process of installing them over in my Instagram stories last night and I got so many questions and comments that I decided to write a post.

    Installing Curlformers

One of the more common comments I got was that the installation process looked really complicated. When I first discovered Curlformers that was my initial reaction too, but they were simple to use. The hook was my concern as I was scared it would rip my hair or be painful, but I found that it was only an issue if I used too much hair in one section. The Curlformers come in different sizes so you can use them depending on the style you’re going for. I purchased a pack as well as extra packets as my hair is really thick. Yes, it’s definitely time-consuming to install Curlformer them but it wasn’t that bad on my tapered cut and now that I have short natural hair. It took me about 40 minutes this time around and about an hour with longer hair.

    Products I used…

I washed my hair and used Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in conditioner to prep my short natural hair. I used LottaBody Wrap Me Mousse as a styler because the word “texturizing” in their Setting lotion scared me a bit and I’ve also used Jane Wrap and Roll in the past and I think my hair was less frizzy.

What hair types it works on?

Surprisingly, these work on every hair type regardless of how tight your curl pattern is. I’ve found that the key is ensuring that your hair dries properly. I left them overnight just to be sure that they dry.

    Results

On my short natural tapered hair, the Curlformers look really good and reminds me of the 90’s pixie hair cuts. I’m happy to rock a different look than my usual wash and go. I’m going to keep experimenting with different styling products to see if I can reduce the frizz factor.

    Have you ever tried Curlformers?

  • Four Ways To Become A Happier Mom in 2019

Aye! It’s 2019 and we’re all ready to be better and happier than ever. Am I right?  By now, most of us know that we have to do a little groundwork to become happier than we are. We need to do things to inspire that good, good feeling in our chest. It doesn’t just magically happen although I’m sure we can all agree that would be incredible. I wanted to share a few things, that’s helped me over the years to become a happier mom. I’m still on my journey as you are, but I found these really worked and so I had to share:

Four Ways To Become A Happier Mom in 2019

    Chase your dreams.

Don’t let your dreams fall along the wayside because you’re a mom now.  I don’t care how many kids you have, you have to chase your dreams. You want to go back to medical school, do it! You want to get your real estate license, open a beauty salon, start a business, write a blog, or move to China. You can still make those dreams happen. I had my first daughter while I was pursuing my master’s degree, sure it was tough, but it felt so god to graduate with my 9-month-old watching.  I did papers while she played in her jumperoo (remember those) and when she napped. It was hard but guess what, I did it, so I know that you can too. Know that if you don’t go after your dreams because you’re a parent, your kids will always know and feel you not being your very best and that’s not inspiring, so you have to find a way. There is a solution to every problem. It’s true that where there is a will, there is a way. You can do it!

    Work on Yourself.

We all have issues that we need to work through. Mine is terrible anxiety that can be crippling on some days, you know best what yours is. It might seem tough but take small steps to work through whatever you’re struggling with. You can attempt to do it alone but it’s better if you get a support system, find a therapist and develop a wellness routine for your needs. This work is for you first of all but also for your family, our children deserve for us to heal ourselves so that they can get the best from us.

Spend quality time away from your kids.

I am guilty of spending every breathing moment with my children. I love spending time with them, they make me laugh, they’re the coolest people but when I find myself losing patience easily, I know that I need to spend quality time away from them. Going off and doing things that I truly enjoy and spending time with people who I love and enjoy being around really makes me feel good. So many times, they beg me not to leave them to go out, but  I return I am lighter, happier, free and I can think much more clearly. When I am happy, so are my kids and this year I am a bit more confident about leaving them to seek my own happiness because I know, it will make me an amazing mother. Think about doing the things that light you up, and step away even if you can’t do so often this year.

    Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is the secret to happiness! A grateful heart turns a frown into a smile. It stops you from complaining and redirecting that complaint into a compliment. It helps you to see the positive in the most negative situations. Practicing gratitude will make you a happier mom in 2019. If you want to get yourself into the habit of gratitude, try the book The Magic, after working through this book for the first time in 2013, I changed my perspective and started to appreciate small things I took for granted and people in my life that I took for granted. If you haven’t read it yet, you should try it. It’s 28 days and by the end, your perspective will naturally shift.

  • The Truth About My Second Big Chop

I finally ready to share the truth about my second big chop! My Second Big Chop StoryMy Second Big Chop StoryEvery fall and winter I struggle with my natural hair! A quick wash and go in the summer turns into the nightmare of holding a blowdryer in my hand forever trying to diffuse my hair, sitting under a hairdryer long enough to get backaches and still going out with it semi-wet. My hair has always taken a long time to dry, even when it was relaxed. Over the last year, one thing I had less and less of was time to dry it. Now that I have three little kids, I found myself either wearing a hat or my hair was undone and messy way too often. After trying hard to maintain my curls and failing over and over, I decided that it would be best to just cut it. I wanted to look and feel chic not shabby on a daily basis and not just on the days when I had time to dry it. I had tried alternatives like braid-outs and twist-out but they never worked for my hair or lifestyle. I needed to cut it, at least for this season in my life, I needed the freedom of short hair.

    Second Big Chop

I didn’t know where to start though, my first big chop 8 years ago is now a blur in my memory. I was so focused on growing my natural hair that I totally missed out on loving my short hair, I wanted things to be different for my second big chop. After spending countless hours on Pinterest, looking for inspiration I decided that I wanted a tapered cut, an edgy haircut, and highlights felt perfect for my personality.

I was so excited that I literally skipped into the salon but my hair cut looked way too basic for me. It didn’t look like a tapered cut and I was really disappointed. Fortunately, the salon had an adjustment period and I was able to take advantage of that time to get my hair exactly the way I wanted it. My stylist did an amazing job the second time around and I love the cut now.

That said, doing a second big chop was such a drastic change that I am still adjusting to it. I hate to think of myself as one of those girls who is attached to their hair but I guess I’m more attached than I cared to admit to myself. I can’t say I fully regret cutting my hair because it looks good more often and bad hair days are fewer but I am having a tough time adjusting to not having my hair to frame my face or hide my big head.

I wanted to be transparent about my feelings about my hair, loving the style but sometimes not so much on myself.  I know that I’m not the only woman who feels this way after a first, second or third big chop. However, I am the woman who will push through these feelings and address my insecurities head on because I know this will help my personal development and my two little girls (and son) who are watching.

    Second Big Chop

Enough with the deep stuff, I plan to try out different styles and have fun with my hair. I like to joke that I’m too boring when it comes to hair and Rachel Dolezal has worn styles than me. I’m working on changing that and having fun with my hair in 2019.

Have you ever done a big chop? How many times did you do it?
