The C- word! Cancer, the one most of us knock on wood a few times when someone says it. It’s a word all of us would agree is very painful to hear next to another C- word — childhood. Yet still every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer with over 15,000 children affected throughout the United States every year. That number is too high, we have to fight for the children. That’s why I cleared out my schedule to attend the Hyundai Hope on Wheels pop-up concert here in New York City two weeks ago to pledge my support and learn about all of the inspiring ways Hyundai Hope on Wheels is helping children across the country fight cancer.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels 2019 Commitment
As I shared on Instagram, this year’s theme is “Minutes are Precious” and all of us moms understand how important our children’s milestones are to our families. Milestones that children diagnosed with cancer don’t always get to celebrate. That’s why Hyundai Hope on Wheels is working to fight cancer so more kids who are diagnosed can live their dreams. This year, Hyundai Hope on Wheels awarded a combined $16 million in new grants to 75 researchers for innovative approaches to helping kids fight cancer. As one of the largest funders of pediatric cancer research, this year Hyundai Hope on Wheels will reach $160 million in total lifetime funding towards finding a cure.
Even with so a heavy diagnosis like cancer, I’m always amazed by the beautiful spirit of pediatric patients who continue to fight bravely and live fearlessly. At the concert, the legendary Doug E. Fresh performed and what stuck with me most (besides his epic beatboxing) was his stories of going to the hospitals and how much joy it brings him to perform for children and their families as he travels with Hyundai Hope on Wheels.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels 2019 National Youth Ambassadors
Once again, I had the chance to meet the Hyundai Hope on Wheels 2019 National Youth Ambassadors Elizabeth and Carter who are both adolescents and childhood cancer survivors. They’re going to continue to travel the country to different hospitals to bring hope and encouragement to pediatric cancer patients.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels 2019 Grants Tour
From this month until September, Hyundai Hope on Wheels will travel to different hospitals across the country presenting grant checks. The tour will also be interactive for childhood cancer patients to put their hands in paint and place it on the Hyundai Hope on Wheels vehicles — the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, Tucson, or Kona vehicle. These vehicles will represent hope and unity in the fight against cancer by all these kids in different hospitals.
National Pediatric Cancer Awareness month – September
Stay tuned though because in September for National Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, Hyundai Hope on Wheels will announce a series of events to raise awareness about pediatric cancer and invite supporters and followers of Hyundai Hope on Wheels to post photos or messages on social media using the hashtag, #EndChildhoodCancer
