  • Walking the Lavender Carpet at the My Little Pony:The Movie Premiere

The Princess Fairy have had some really epic experiences and I know for a fact that walking the lavender carpet at the My Little Pony:The Movie premiere yesterday ranks really high on that list. See this is a kid who spent the entire summer reading My Little Pony books and she’s obsessed with the show. I doubt she slept much after I informed her that we were invited to the premiere by Lionsgate. She exclaimed that she was going to be famous and was really excited about getting to see the movie a few weeks early especially since it’s her birthday week.

When we arrived at the theater we ran into Rainbow Dash (her favorite pony) and I thought she would melt with excitement.

Next, we had the chance to walk the lavender carpet. We went before the stars of the movie so the process was super fast as they needed time to be interviewed by the media etc. Let me tell you it was so awesome for my daughter who just loved everything from the color of the carpet to having her photo taken while walking it. The fact that it was for My Little Pony:The Movie was the icing on the cake.

As if that wasn’t enough fun for one day, she then had the chance to mingle with the My Little Pony characters, get her face painted, and hair sprayed (she went for glitter).

Then came time to watch the movie that she was bursting with excitement to see. The movie didn’t disappoint and as a mom, I loved the theme of friendship, teamwork, and self-confidence throughout the movie. What I loved the most is although there were numerous times that the scenes felt hopeless there was a strong lesson of the importance of determination, a characteristic I know most of us parents want our kids to have. My daughter really enjoyed the storyline and seemed to quickly learn the new characters. It’s a really good movie and I would highly recommend it. The movie debuts in theaters on October 6th.

  • Family Night at a Mets Game

As most of you know, our little family live in Queens, New York the home of New York Mets. My son has never been to a Mets game and he gets excited whenever we drive past Citi Field on the Van Wyck Expressway. So last Saturday we surprised him and his sister with a family night at a Mets game. Now before I tell y’all about the game I have to tell you how the surprise went. That morning, my son and I went to another event in Brooklyn and he had no clue about the game but my husband told my daughter while they went out bike riding together. He told her it’s a secret but that didn’t stop her from telling my son (making him promise not to tell me) and then when my husband and my son stepped out telling me. I’m laughing just typing this because everyone knew the secret and my daughter made me promise not to tell her dad she spilled it. Anyway, with the secret spilled we got ready, my husband managed to get my daughter an adorable hoodie on sale and I borrowed his hoodie since my Mets tee can no longer fit. My son already had a Mets shirt so that worked out perfectly.

My son was really excited, those of you who follow me on Instagram saw him dancing around at Citi Field.  He was just so happy to finally go to a game, that he barely bothered with the game (they were playing Cincinnati BTW)  but who can blame him. It’s a really stimulating environment for a four-year-old. I did notice that he was slightly bothered by the volume of the speakers and covered his ears frequently so I will be sure to get him noise reduction headphones the next time we go so he can be more comfortable.

Besides that, it was a good time and my daughter even managed to get a mini lesson about Jackie Robinson, the first black professional baseball player who integrated the league. We visited the Jackie Robinson Rotunda as we always do and took a few photos so the kids could remember the occasion.

We had a really good time as a family and The Mets won! We’re excited to go back to see the Mets next year with the baby.

  • Things I Hope my Kids Remember About Summer 2017

We have just about one month before the kids head back to school here in New York City and I’ve been thinking about how we can make the most out of the rest of the summer. Our family had big plans to spend almost two weeks in the Caribbean this year but my doctor put those plans on hold because of the threat of Zika. Instead, we’ve spent the summer falling in love with our beloved New York City. Now that we’re in August which is more of a month for winding down and making the most of the last summer days, I am spending a great deal of my time thinking about what I hope my kids would remember about summer 2017. Here are a few things:

Rattles and Heels - Kids Remember Summer 2017

    Bonding with each other

My kids are almost 3 years apart, while my son is entering Pre-K in the fall my daughter will be heading to Grade 2. During the school year, they have different classes and responsibilities. My daughter has homework and projects and my son isn’t quite there yet. This usually limits their bonding time but summer means that they have time to bond and enjoy each other and it’s so incredible to see how close they’ve gotten in the past 6 weeks (although they have their hilarious bickers and fallouts). It’s also their last summer without their baby sibling here so I love that they’re making their own memories together.

    Bonding with me

My son snuggling on me while read him a book will never get old. My daughter hugging me and asking me to show her how to make or do something makes my heart so excited. I love having the chance to spend so much time with them and I’m really enjoying these last days of them being my only two kids. I want to shower them with love and let them know that the way I feel about them will never change.

    New hobbies

My daughter got hooked on listening to podcasts this summer, she even wants to do her own now. NPR:Wow in the World is her favorite and seeing her laying on her bed listening with her headphones on and then telling me all about it is so exciting. It’s even rubbed off on my son who now wants to listen to them in the car whenever we go out. I LOVE podcasts so it’s nice to see them get into something that I can relate to.

    Self-Expression

    remember summer 2017

I never hold my kids back from expressing themselves especially when it comes to visual art and writing. I strongly encourage them and it’s fun to hear the inspiration behind their work and to watch them spontaneously paint or draw as inspiration hit them through the summer.

    Water fun

Rattles and Heels - Kids Remember about Summer 2017

Summer is unique in that kids get to play in the water as much as they want. Who doesn’t love sprinklers, beach, pool etc? I hope they remember all the fun they had this summer at learning to swim, playing at splash pad and on the beach.

    Endangered

    Appreciate the arts

We live in NYC a city bustling with fantastic plays, Broadway shows, performances and even free summer theater. It’s important that my kids get the chance to appreciate the arts while on break. Last week they were invited to Endangered, a musical off-Broadway about a young boy who gets stuck at the zoo with endangered animals in the process he learns ways that we (humans) can do more to save the animals.

    Learn more about NYC

Talking about NYC, it’s important to us that the kids learn all about New York City, not just the borough where we are being raised in but the uniqueness of the 5 boroughs of the city. We’ve been getting out and exploring parts of the city they’re not familiar with and don’t get to visit during the school year.

    Stronger Sense of self

During the school year, kids are so busy doing all the things required of them that they don’t always get to explore as much about themselves as they would like to. The summer gives them time to develop a really strong sense of self and engage in things that make them fulfilled.

Rattles and Heels - Kids Remember Summer 2017

Basically, I want my kids to return to school with expanded minds, inspired, curious and more worldly. It’s exhilarating to watch them grow figuratively and physically over the summer.
