  • Preparing For Another Successful School Year

    Nature Made

Over the past few days, I’ve been spending more time unplugged and enjoying all the last moments of summer with my kids. Yesterday, while the boys watched cartoons, The Princess Fairy and I slipped away to a nearby coffee shop for a chat. As she nibbled on her pastry and I quietly convinced myself against buying myself one, she asked “Mommy, what year were you in grade one?”  It was an innocent question but my answer seemed like it belonged in comedic history as she laughed at 1990 and she repeatedly said “Wow, 1990?” I couldn’t help but think about what grade one was like back then with no smart boards and tablets. While technology wasn’t as advanced in 1990, back to school had the same feelings of excitement that she’s experiencing now. Preparing kids for a successful school year in 1990 clearly was a lot different to these days. But I think one thing is for sure, setting kids up for success was as much of a priority then as it is now. Besides giving The Princess Fairy a mini history lesson featuring my life as a first grader in 1990, I’ve been preparing her for another successful school year in these ways:

    Successful-schoolyear

     1. Reintroducing an earlier bedtime routine.
Over the summer, we were really lax on bedtimes. The kids stayed up late to read books, sing to the top of their voices and finish playing what seemed like the longest board games ever.  It was all worth it as we made new memories and had extra time to bond. Plus, those nights are the best sleep ever.
    2. Planning make-ahead breakfasts and practicing new recipes.
At the very top of things that make my school mornings suck is making breakfast and lunch. This year, I am hoping to eliminate that problem and maybe use that extra time to swipe on some lipstick by making breakfast the night before or over the weekend. I’ve been on the hunt for ideas and if you have any ideas let me know. I’ve practiced a few recipes like overnight oats, muffins,  quinoa bars and frittatas (which I haven’t tried yet). So far, I think I  may need a whole lot more practice except the overnight oats and chia pudding (tear drops) but I am determined to try more thanks to Pinterest.

    3. Making sure that the kids take a multivitamin.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day but as a mom, I like to also give my kids a daily multivitamin as a supplement to their diet. I must admit that I am really fussy about the multivitamins that I choose for them. The Nature Made® KIDS FIRST®Multivitamin Gummies with Omega-3 Gummies that they currently use provide 9 nutrients, plus the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Do you remember taking those separate DHA supplements when you were pregnant for baby’s brain development? Well, your little ones still need DHA.  While most of us strive to make sure that our kids eat balanced healthy meals daily we know that this isn’t always achieved so these gummies are an easy way to fill many of the nutrient gaps from their diet. These also tastes really good, I’ve tried them myself and the flavors are all-natural fruits with colors derived from natural sources.

    4. Chatting about goals.
Last year, The Princess Fairy’s big goal was to learn to read. She’s reading so well now that she’s going into first grade I am simply amazed at times. This year, she will be focusing on building on her reading skills by learning more about the world around her. She’s particularly interested in animals and science as she wants to become a veterinary doctor when she grows up.
    5. Organizing our home.
There were so many old worksheets and notebooks laying around that were great to look The Princess Fairy’s growth over the past few years but I had to throw them away to make from for all the new work she’s going to be bringing home in first grade. I’m proud of her progress but I can’t hold on to these things forever at the detriment of a crowded home where she can’t think clearly to excel.

  • Always Up For A Challenge

This post is in collaboration with Lee Jeans and contains affiliate links. As always opinions expressed are my own.

My kids are always up for a challenge! Their motivation is simply to outdo each other, in everything they do. One flight of stairs, race. Walking from the car to the house, race. Going down the slide, race. Pack away toys, race. One of the first phrases my son said clearly was “Race ya!” and we’re constantly reminding them to be careful when they challenge each other. Yesterday was no different but The Princess Fairy was determined to win. Dressed like a winner in her sequin stars shirt and Lee skinny bootleg jeans which she described as “extra soft” she was up for a challenge. They wanted to go ride their bicycles through the park, a safe space since there is no traffic and they could enjoy riding. Soon as we got outside, The Super Knight challenged his sister “Race ya!” to which she responded: “I will win!” In was on.

He was ahead of her initially and as you can see she was not okay with that.

Then she got off to a nice start and he was behind so to seal the deal, she did something that I completely didn’t expect. She pulled out a new tactic, as my friend MJ of Fab Haute Mama (whose daughter also loves to win) put it, she used her “critical thinking skills” and yelled back at him “I just saw a bear in the bushes!”

Wow! I couldn’t help but laugh and I’m grateful Mr. Rattles is a much more serious parent than I am because  he immediately called her out on trying to scare her three-year-old brother.  The funniest thing about the whole situation is the little guy was so far behind us he didn’t even hear her and knew nothing about this fake bear in the bushes.

The Princess Fairy won but because we are fair parents we started another mini race and The Princess Fairy won again but since her dad had her stop before the make believe finish line her brother technically won. The Super Knight is not one to let even a small victory go to waste, those of you who saw my Snapchat or Instagram stories saw his celebration song “I won, I won! WooHoo!” all afternoon.  Good thing he didn’t see that bear in the bushes and The Princess Fairy wore her soft Lee jeans so she could move comfortably. By the way, is it me or is the woven belt on those jeans everything?  These jeans are very affordable and currently on sale so grab them here for your kids.

  • 5 Backpack Must-Haves For Preschool

    This post contains affilate links.

By now most of you know that The Super Knight will be starting preschool in a few weeks. Well, last week the doorbell rang and the delivery guy had me sign for a box that happened to contain my little guy’s new backpack. This was followed by him jumping around and asking me to Facetime everyone so they could see him model his new backpack. Since then he’s been saying “Bye Bye” to me as I busy myself cleaning up or cooking to head to imaginary school. It’s so cute to see his excitement and even to see the little toys he tosses in his backpack. However, as excited as he is about wearing his backpack he gets really shy whenever we mention that he will be making friends and meeting his new teachers. Who wouldn’t blame him? Even as an adult in my early 30’s, sometimes I get nervous when I’m meeting people for the first time. What I want is for him to learn is a little discomfort and new situations while a little nerve wrecking is important for advancement in life.

But not too much discomfort, because at 3, I don’t ever want to traumatize him and make him reluctant to step out of his comfort zone or worst yet hate school in the future. To me, the balance is sending him off with as many comforts from home as possible so he feels confident and loved. Fortunately, I’ve been down this road with his sister before so I made a quick list of things that I remembered helped her at his age and hopped on the computer to placed a few quick orders.

Here are my 5 Must-Haves For Nursery School Kids:

    1. Water Bottle

We make sure that our little ones are hydrated by offering them water often and monitoring their water intake. When they’re are at school it’s not as easy to monitor their water intake so I like to pack them water so they can remain hydrated throughout the day. My preference is stainless steel bottles with their favorite characters.

    2. Packet of tissues

Sure the teacher’s desk will have a box of tissues but I think it’s important for my little guy to have his own packet of tissues especially for the first few days of school when he may be a little nervous to speak up about his needs.

    3. A photo of your family

My daughter’s preschool was really cool with this and each kid had a photo of their family at their seats  and their cubby. I think this made their days easier and were great conversation starters. I’m not sure if my son’s class will be set up for him to display our family photo (I hope so) but I will definitely place one in his backpack that he can look at if he ever starts missing us during the day.

    4. Lip balm

My kids both like to keep their lips moist. I usually hold on to my little guy’s lip balm and apply it when I see fit but I’m going to hand that responsibility over to him so he can apply it if he ever feels like his lips feel dry.

    5. Extra outfit and socks

At 3, accidents are highly likely between potty accidents and just spills. I’m going to send my guy extra outfit, socks and underwear. If you’re doing this, make sure to switch to weather appropriate backup outfits as the season’s change. Also, don’t forget to label everything.

What else would you add to this list of must-haves for nursery school?
