  • Fuel Summer With Milk + GIVEAWAY

Thank you Milk Life for sponsoring this post. Support The Great American Milk Drive and donate as little as $5 to deliver a gallon of fresh milk to children and families who need it most here.

If you haven’t realized by now, I am a really simple gal and I live for the simple joys of summer (okay, not just summer but life in general). Anyway, this weekend definitely was simple and I loved every second of it. It didn’t hurt that the weather was perfect so we enjoyed some really nice moments together just joking around and laughing outside. One of my favorite things to do is listen to all my daughter’s stories about her friends and her days at school. She’s particularly nostalgic lately with the end of the school year so close and doing a lot of reminiscing about the past year in Kindergarten.  Yesterday, they were having milk and cookies and she was sharing a story as usual when my heart quickly filled up with gratitude. My kids were happy enjoying their milk and cookies and having a happy moment and I was reminded of how fortunate our family is that we can afford to provide them with good quality food, clothing, and shelter. These are simple things for us but for many families in this country buying milk isn’t always possible because of financial constraints.

    enjoying milk in the summer

My daughter shared that she is a bit saddened by the end of the school year because she wouldn’t get to spend as much time with her school friends during the summer. As she shared this, I thought about the fact that there are children her age who have deeper reasons for feeling sad that the school year is ending. You see, more than 22 million children may miss out on milk’s nutrition this summer when they lose access to free or reduced-price meal programs at school and even kids whose families receive food donations do not always get milk donated since milk is one of the least donated food items.  At a matter of fact, the average food bank is only able to provide the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year. While it was a hard conversation to start, I decided to tell my daughter this. I don’t want her to ever take these things for granted. My goal is to raise compassionate children who care about others and help improve the lives of those in need.

    enjoying summer milk and cookies

It breaks my heart to know that while most of our kids are enjoying summer vacations, days soaking up the sun on the beach and not having a worry in the world there are children who have to go without such a good source of protein. I mean take a moment and think about your kids not having milk with their cereal at breakfast, or oatmeal or not being able to give them a cold glass of milk when they crave it. I don’t only sympathize with the children but also the parents who are in this really tough position. It’s wonderful though that there are people who care are making changes to improve this situation.

One of these movements for change is The Great American Milk Drive which is making it possible for fresh milk to be delivered to children in need this summer. The Great American Milk Drive is a collaborative effort between Feeding America, America’s dairy farmers, and milk companies and turns online donations into gallons of milk for families in local communities. So far, the program has provided more than 12 million servings of milk to families across the country. The month of June is National Dairy Month and the perfect time to get involved and donate since many kids are already are on summer break or going on summer break this month. To help in your community this summer, you can head tomilklife.com/give and make a small donation. Even if you can only $5, your donation will deliver a highly desired and nutrient-rich gallon of fresh milk to children who need it most. Deliver a gallon of nutrient-rich milk and help to ensure that all children have the potential to play, learn and grow.

I want to note that  USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) helps to deliver meals to children when school is not in session. However, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) do not reach children during the summer months. That’s why food banks are much more important during the summer to ensure that kids are getting milk’s 9 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality protein per 8 ounce serving to help ensure that they have the potential to play, learn and grow this summer.

  • 7 Tips for The Perfect Summer Family Beach Day

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with HBO and DiMe Media. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

As many of you know, I grew up on the beautiful island of Grenada in the Caribbean. There are so many beaches on the island that you’re never far away from a beach no matter where you go. I’ve shared that my family spent a lot of time hanging out on the beach and I loved those times especially playing in the sand.  It brings me so much joy to see that my kids love sun, sea and sand as much as I do. Those of you who follow us on social media know that we had our first beach trip of the year on Monday. With a long cold winter behind us, this was really a nice time for us to enjoy our family and savor the moment. But the beach can be an awful experience for us moms if we’re not properly prepared. I wanted to share 7 tips with you to ensure that you enjoy the perfect summer family beach day:

    Family Beach time

    1. Schedule your trip for after 2 pm.

If you’re heading to a beach with little or no shade from the sun, aim to go after 2:00pm. Why? Well, the likelihood of you and your children getting a sunburn is pretty low although the best time would be after 4:00pm but with most beaches closing at 6:00pm that may not give you enough time to enjoy the beach. Not only is this time of the day more comfortable for kids to play in the sun but if you have babies and toddlers they would have a chance a to take a nap by this then and are energized to enjoy their time at the beach.

    2. Bring sun protection.

Okay, so this is an area where I have failed before and let me take a quick moment to explain why. When I was growing up, all the beaches on my island had trees that we were able to use as shade at the beach. Once I moved to the United States, I assumed there would be trees on the beaches but I’ve found that on many beaches (here in New York) there are no trees so I had to learn the hard way by struggling under the piercing heat of the sun. Now, I always ensure that I protect my family from the sun by walking with hats for the kids and sunscreen with UV protection.  A beach umbrella, hat or UV protected swimwear are also great for added protection.

    3. Stay Hydrated.

Whenever we spend a lot of time outdoors during the summer especially on the beach, I make it a point to ensure that our family is properly hydrated.  I’ve shared before that we love sparkling water and it’s one of the first things I pack infused with a slice of lemon or fruits. My kids favorite fruits for beach time snacking are grapes, oranges, and papaya. An advantage of going after 2 pm is that we’re still full from lunch so we can pack lighter meals.

    4. Bring toys for the kids.

One of the few times, that I’ve seen my kids really focused is when they are busy playing in the sand building castles and domes. They could literally do this for hours if they’re never interrupted. It’s like the sand has some magic that keeps them contented to play with it.  Here’s my little guy in his own little world playing in the sand. A bucket and spade, molding toys, beach ball, kites, and bubbles are all great options for the beach.

    5. Extra bag for wet clothes.

Forgetting to bring an extra bag (I use plastic bags) to store wet clothes can be annoying so make sure to pack one or keep a few stashed in your beach bag.

    Beach Must Haves

    6. Focus on bonding.

    family beach time essentials

As I shared on Instagram and Facebook, my daughter and I had a fantastic time collecting shells and splashing each other in the water. We played with the beach ball as a family which my husband really got into it. We had fun taking photos and recording clips fo Snapchat but the best moments were when we put all the electronics down and just enjoy some good old school family fun.

    7. Keep toilet seat covers handy.

With two small children, I know that the words “I need to use the bathroom” can be a downer for moms. The public bathrooms at some beaches may have wet floors or are littered with sand, trash etc making it uncomfortable for kids to use the toilet. I always walk with waterproof disposable toilet seat covers that the kids can sit on without worry.

Elmo, standing, 3/4 body pose, facing forward. My children are always excited about summer beach days but on the days that they’re not on the beach you would find us getting into other outdoor activities or hanging out with Elmo and friends on Sesame Street. You can catch new episodes of Sesame Street every Saturday morning at 9:00 am ET/8:00 am CT on HBO.

  • Celebrate Father’s Day with a Photo Memory Lane + Snapfish Giveaway

One of the things that I’ve learned in my almost 10 years of marriage to Mr. Rattles, is that he loves when we make an experience out of his gifts. Those of you who’ve been around for a while may remember the fun we had last Father’s Day with the message in the bottle. This year, I wanted us to do something sentimental again so the kids and I plotted to make him some photo gifts thanks to our friends at Snapfish. Now, we haven’t shown it to him yet and since he reads the blog probably once a month, we may get away with him not seeing this post. I love the idea of creating a memory lane of his almost 6 years as a dad, so the kids helped me select some of our favorite photos ranging from when I was pregnant with The Princess Fairy to selfies he’s recently taken with them that I stole from his phone.

    Snapfish-fathers-day

While choosing the images to upload was time-consuming my little helpers made the experience really fun. We chatted while I searched through Instagram, my computer and Facebook for photos. I love how easy it was to locate and upload photos while working on the photo book, magnets, and the Father’s Day card that we got him and the experience gave us the chance to reminisce about all the good times our little family enjoyed together. Of course, the kids loved the photos of themselves with their dad when they were babies.

[Tweet “Maybe you will get your guy to shed a tear or two with some sappy photo gifts for Father’s Day 😉 “]

I know that it’s going to be the same when he finally gets to check out the gifts and see sentimental photos like the first time our daughter rode her bike or when The Super Knight was finally brave enough to get on the carousel or when he got soaked in the sprinklers at the park running after the baby. Maybe, just maybe this may even make him maybe shed an internal tear hahaha. After all, he’s an engaged dad on this journey called parenting, well in his case fatherhood.
