  • Pay it Forward | American Red Cross Giving Day

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of American Red Cross for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Red Cross Giving Day is  March 28th and I want to encourage you to support the Red Cross financially on Giving Day not because of what I’ve heard or read but what the Red Cross did for me over a decade ago. For me, joining in with thousands of people to support the Red Cross is about paying it forward. [Tweet “Make an impact @redcross #help1family  “] Things I can say with certainty about myself is I am strong and resilient. I’ve managed to stand when everything around me burned to the ground and I mean that literally. Oh, just writing those words made me shiver. It happened when I was in my third year of college, at the end of the fall semester as everyone around me prepped for Christmas my only focus was finishing the semester strong. I had been studying all day and took a break to shower and watch the Oprah Show when my roommate started banging on my bedroom door frantically screaming “It’s a fire!” I grabbed my jacket and we ran down the three flights of stairs in the row house we lived in and stood onto the sidewalk. l remember the date December 14th, I still remember all the neighbors standing looking on as our building and the one next door (where the fire originated) went up in flames. Fortunately, no one was hurt and I felt really grateful that my roommate was home to alert me. Besides trembling from the cold December winter air, I trembled in fear of what was going to happen in the immediate future. I was young, independent and very jaded so asking for help wasn’t even a consideration. I managed to call one friend who made a bleak promise to call me back. One woman made her way over to me and my roommate letting us know that she was a volunteer with the Red Cross would provide us hotel accommodations for up to two weeks until we figured out our living situation. It was then the reality of the situation set in, I was in for a challenge (which turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me but that’s another blog post). I felt as if I had just dropped into a safety net thanks to the Red Cross. [Tweet “The Red Cross was there for me on my worst day! #help1family”] She patiently waited and when the firefighters told us we could go back into the building she was right there. I felt hopeful since I had somewhere to stay while I finished off the last few days of the semester. I was still able to study for my final exams in a safe place, thanks to the Red Cross. I can’t remember exactly how long I stayed at that hotel but it was between 2-3 days and the Red Cross took care of the bill. That experience made me very supportive of the Red Cross and the next month when I found a really wonderful job, I donated to them from my first paycheck to pay it forward. Just like people had donated and their money put a roof over my head during my worst hours. I want others to have that relief when small or big disasters affect their families. This is why I’ve been a big supporter of the American Red Cross annual Giving Day for the last few years. Giving to the Red Cross means a family wouldn’t have to worry about paying for a hotel when they need to  find a new home. This is why financial donations are particularly important for those few hours after a disaster. For Giving Day, a gift of $88.50 can provide a family with food and blankets for one day.  So

  • Five Things to do with your Baby this Spring

This post is sponsored by BabbleBoxx.com on behalf of The Children’s Place.

It may not feel like it yet here in New York City but it’s spring and since it’s my baby girl’s first spring I am excited. Since the flu season was so awful this year, we stayed indoors so much that I think even the baby has cabin fever and is ready to break out of our apartment. I know getting outside daily with her would be great for both of us. I have fond memories of my two older kids first spring, and I know hers will be just as amazing.

5 Things I plan to do with my Baby this Spring

Her wardrobe is already stocked up for her outings thanks to the Children’s Place BUNDLES BABY PLACE™ collection. Last week she received her first bundle and it includes a hoodie, a lion sleeve bodysuit, a short sleeve bodysuit and a pant which is perfect for laying up on spring days. What I love most about her bundle is I can mix and match the pieces, and the quality is excellent (I washed it before we took these photos). Children’s Place has been one of my favorite places to grab pretty play pieces for my kids since I came a mom over seven years ago and these new bundles make styling the baby very easy.  Along with her bundle, she received ten adorable soft bows that her older sister thinks are for her dolls (I had to hide them from her).  I plan to buy her a pick up a few more baby bundles for her spring activities, especially the Baby Girls Rainbow Stripe set.  Five Things to do with your Baby this Spring  Five Things to do with your Baby this Spring

Anyway, here are five things to do with your baby this spring, just in case you need some inspiration:

    1. Playground swing for the first time.

At the top of my list is taking my little girl to the playground so she could get into the baby swing for the first time. I know she’s going to love it because she loves when I swing her through the air in my arms and all the movements when she’s in her Mamaroo. I have to wait until she’s sitting up and she has more neck control first though.

    2. First trip to the zoo.

The spring is my favorite time to take my kids to the zoo as the weather is great for walking around and it’s not as crowded as during the summer months. I’ve tirelessly tried to show my older children animals at zoos while they ignored me as babies but did that mean we didn’t have a fun day? Nope, some of the best times.

    3. Meet her sibling’s classmates.

Winter isn’t exactly the best season to introduce the baby to the older kids friends, but as the weather clears up she’s sure to meet her sibling’s friends, and I know that they’re going to be excited to see her in real life finally.

    4. Make her first Easter basket.

A few years ago, I made my older daughter a fancy easter basket (you can see it here), and I’m feeling moved to make the baby one and share it here with you too. She’s little egg hunt, but I’m sure the big kids will be willing to help her.

    5. Go to her first class.

She’s going to take her first class this spring, she’s starting swimming next month, and I plan to try a music class weekly or biweekly.

  • Life Lessons I’m Teaching My Kids

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Ivory. The opinions and text are all mine.

Raising kids in the city means we’re always on the go and sometimes I worry with all the busy days, my kids may miss some very important life lessons, so I’m intentional about teaching them whenever I get the chance. Now, I’m an adult in my 30’s so I can look back at myself in my 20’s and teens and realize how little I knew about life and my naivety. Sometimes I think back to certain situations and cover my face in embarrassment for my younger self. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t change anything but there are some hard lessons I had to learn on my own. I would rather my kids skip these lessons altogether. Since I have a close relationship them, I try to teach life lessons in an age-appropriate manner. I know the younger we have these conversations, the more prepared they would be for the “real world.” These are universal life lessons my children can benefit from learning and yours, too! So here are 5 important life lessons to teach children:

LIFE LESSONS I’M TEACHING MY KIDS

    Perfection is unattainable.

I’ve been intentional about setting high standards for my little ones. I believe it’s important for them to strive to do THEIR best and there is no cap on that. That said, I’m supportive and never push them to do anything they’re not interested in or makes them unhappy. I believe my role as their mom is to support their dreams and when they need me.

Life Lessons I'm Teaching My Kids

Stick to pure products especially for skin care I’m still trying to crack the code to consistently eating foods with pure ingredients. I think we’re mostly there but it’s tough to break old habits. Fortunately, I’m raising them with natural hair and grew up using pure products like Ivory which is 99.44 percent pure. I like to joke that Ivory is “old school” popular but “new school” conscious with 138 years as “The Original Gentle Family Brand.” I have peace of mind knowing certain Ivory products are free of heavy perfumes, dyes, and parabens. As I shared last year, my grandmother introduced me to Ivory as a child and I’m happy to keep it in the family.

Life Lessons I'm Teaching My Kids

Our favorite products from Ivory include:

    • Ivory Original 3-bar
    • Ivory Original Body Wash
    • Ivory Free & Gentle Body Wash with Pear & Sandalwood
      • This body wash includes the #1 Dermatologist-Recommended moisturizing ingredient!

    Respond don’t react.

In the past, I would become overwhelmed the minute I faced an issue and would find myself always reacting, and, in some cases, overreacting. I rather my kids learn this very young because staying in control, thinking and not responding emotionally really helps us make solid decisions.

Life Lessons I'm Teaching My Kids

Quality time with family is not negotiable.

I have my personal values system and my family is at the top. Whenever I make decisions, my family is considered above anything else. These days, the kids seem to prefer talking with me over playing games or watching movies. So, you can find us enjoying the fairer weather in New York while going for long walks and talking each other’s ears off. Those are my favorite times lately and I wouldn’t dare watch my phone or take my attention away from them.

    Consistency leads to success.

My first encounter with the word “success” was a huge sign in my elementary school which was hung above one of the doors. The sign said, “Success comes to those who work hard for it.” I grew up blindly believing the saying, however, life taught me it takes more than hard work, it takes consistency and grit, an important lesson I am teaching my children. These are the five lessons I’m currently teaching my children. I’m sure that as I grow older and wiser and life teaches more lessons, I will have more to teach them.
