I got an email this week that made me squeal, an opportunity so good that even Shonda Rhimes would have said “Hell yes!” before her now famous Year of Yes. This opportunity was to interview the legendary actress Loretta Devine. Yes, Dream Girls, The Preacher’s Wife and Doc McStuffins Hallie. You can listen to the full interview on my podcast here.

I was first introduced to Ms. Devine in the 90’s when I first watched the now iconic Waiting to Exhale movie as a curious teenager. Lately, I’ve been tuning in to check out her role as Cynthia on the intelligent and funny NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show. I love the way The Carmichael Show touches on topics that most people feel a bit uncomfortable talking about such as gender inequality, gentrification, and police brutality but are really necessary conversations. NBC gave me the chance to take a sneak peek of tonight’s episode which tackles motherhood and depression. I must say that the way the episode was delivered was very intelligent and thought-provoking. I’m going to be watching again and following the conversation on social media. Take a look at the clip here!

The Carmichael Show - Season 1

The line that really resonated with me in this episode and I’m sure it would do the same for many moms is “The mom has to be happy in the picture…the mom has to smile for the entire family.” I know this is true and I always remind myself that if I am not happy then it will be difficult to make my children happy. As many of you already know, I am a huge fan of therapy and I benefited greatly from it during my years as a college student so if the blues ever hit me the way it hit Cynthia in tonight’s episode, I wouldn’t hesitate to go.

Make sure to watch tonight’s episode of The Carmichael Show on NBC at 9:00pm EST/8:00 CT and let me know what you think.
